Launch event | Marigold Beadwork Co-operative and OHGS Oceanic Beadwork Range
4 August 2022
WiSER, University of the Witwatersrand
In this project, Oceanic Humanities for the Global South collaborated with the Bulawayo-based co-operative Marigold Beads to produce a range of oceanic necklaces. The project formed part of the public humanities mandate of OHGS which sought to convey to a wider audience how different media represent the ocean, with its challenges of scale, visibility, depth, pressure and constant motion. It explored how the stubborn solidity of beads can evoke the complex fluidity and fugitive shimmer of seawater. The event comprised a presentation of the oceanic necklaces with guest speaker Jay Pather from UCT.
