Mapule Mohulatsi speaking at the Indian Ocean Circularities on the 'watermeisie' (mermaid figure, water maiden or water girl), a figure who occupies different imaginative as well as perceptive understandings of life underwater. Mohulatsi argues that the watermeisie as a nomadic figure provides us with a speculative re-mapping of slave memory in Southern Africa, especially in the Cape; which in turn adds a new dimension to slave memory shared with the Caribbean, as well as the Americas.
